Netflix Introduces Download To Go

Netflix | Brand Partner

The giant streaming king, Netflix introduces download and go on certain devices for those wanting to keep up on their favorite shows or binge watch without needing an Internet connection.

I love to lay in the tub with the lights out, relax away from the kids and catch up on Fuller House or see what’s going on in Stranger Things on Netflix. My son also loves to watch his shows while we are out and about. Places like doctor offices, ICBC or grocery shopping tends to bore him. Usually I have to download a movie or two to the tablet or phone just to keep him occupied.

Well not anymore.

Now you an watch your favorite shows like The Crown, Narcos, Orange is the New Black and many other titles with more coming. You simply find the title you want to download and add it to your history of downloads to watch later offline.

So who does this benefit?

Anyone. Everyone. Download and Go benefits anyone who goes anywhere without a wireless connection. For people who travel, work or are on the go where an Internet connection just isn’t available.

The new feature is available right now for phones and tablets running Android and iOS devices. It’s a service users have been crying out for. A service that Amazon has been offering for a long time. Though Netflix has way more titles open for downloading.

The service is not available for PC, Mac or Windows apps. I’m hoping that Netflix will change this in the future. It would be nice to take my laptop camping with the kids without having to bring my external drive to watch movies with no WiFi.

Having the ability to download your favorite movies and TV shows is going to be a game changer not just for Netflix users, but for the streaming giant themselves. But will it keep those paying monthly subscription fees around?

The Good at Being Able to Download Content from Netflix

  • Those traveling, flying or taking the bus or train will now benefit from being able to stay entertained with limited connectivity.
  • You only have to download a movie once for it show in your downloads to watch, cutting back on streaming time and saving money on data usage.

Now The bad

  • The service is only available for Netflix users with Apple or Android devices
  • Downloads are currently downloaded to the main device storage. There is no ability to down to an SD card which will make a difference on devices with limited storage.

It’s (mostly) just Netflix Originals right now, unfortunately, and I don’t know how long it will be before they add other stuff. So you can watch Stranger Things or Fuller House, but not movies or shows that Netflix didn’t produce themselves. It’s a great feature, but I don’t have a lot of faith they will expand it quickly. Amazon Prime Streaming, meanwhile, lets you download anything on the service.
