What You Need To Know When Buying a Car From a Dealership

Buying a car from a dealership can be scary if you don’t know what to look for. A few months back DH and I were out shopping for a new vehicle. We wanted to buy a car that was new to us. A car that was reliable and not too expensive. We also wanted a car that came with some kind of warranty. There are good dealerships and bad ones, this we learned the hard way. Tiffany Watson (Auto Girl) from Go Dodge Surrey shares some tips on what you need to look out for when buying a car from a dealership to save you thousands in your pocket and a slew of headaches.

Tip #1. Set a budget

DH and I had a budget set for what we wanted to spend on our monthly payment. We were set on buying a used car (new to us) but I didn’t want to go overboard. Having a budget put us in the position to know which car we could buy. It made it easier for us to make our choice.

Tiffany’s Tip: A good dealership will ask you what your budget is right away. When buying a car knowing your budget is important so you don’t feel pressured. The last thing you want is to having buyers regret and stuck with an uncomfortable car payment you cannot afford.

Tip #2. Quality of Inventory

One thing DH and I noticed about car shopping with a dealership was that each dealership had their own inventory. Some small. Some large. What I didn’t know was that it is the quality of the inventory that is important. Nobody wants to buy a lemon.

Tiffany’s Tip: Quality vehicles are important when you look at buying a car from a dealership. A dealership’s inventory must have quality choices. It’s my job to make sure clients are happy when they drive away knowing the vehicle they purchased is more than just reliable.

Tip #3. Good Sales People

DH and I visited several dealerships when buying our car. One dealership kept us waiting for an hour before even approaching us to ask if we needed help. I’m not overly picky but I like to be treated a certain way when I’m spending my time and money investing in a vehicle. A good dealership cares about your wants and needs and less about the bottom line.

Tiffany’s Tip: I’ve been a Sales Person in the automotive industry for years and I treat my clients with trust and respect. It can be scary buying a new car, so I want my clients to feel as though they are at their home away from home when working with me. It’s my job to make sure each client feels understood when it comes to their needs and that those needs are met to the best of my ability. This is what you deserve in a good salesperson.

Tip #4. Warranties & Hidden Fees

In buying our car both DH and I wanted to make sure that we got a good warranty. Some dealerships offer incentives which can include covering minor parts and replacements but be careful as some dealerships also have hidden fees. It is important to know what the dealership offers.

Tiffany’s Tip: You need to be prepared when buying a car from a dealership. It’s a salesperson’s job (like myself) to answer all your questions. No pressure sales that make you feel uncomfortable. Have your paperwork in order. Make sure the dealership has quality inventory and they treat you right. Being happy with your purchase is all that matters.
