Ever since we moved into this unit, I haven’t felt comfortable in my own place. Everything felt dingy and dark. I want people to come and visit me, walk in and feel inspired, happy, alive! I want color. So I was browsing around on Craigslist, tired of the picnic table I had redone and was using as a dining table (putting off comfort) over functionality — when I saw it!
I immediately fell in love and had to have it. Growing up as a kid, my Nana used to have a table like this, only hers was square and green with green chairs and silver buttons. I love the retro 50’s and 60’s era. The colors are so vibrant. The furniture always so welcoming. So I thought mmmmmm – how much would it really cost to completely redo our living room, dining room and kitchen when you’re living on a budget?
I had some basic things I did like about my old living space. I love the red knobs and handles in my kitchen. Red is such a fun color. And our sectional was functional but not modern. I wanted RETRO! But how could I achieve this without spending hundreds of dollars and make it look comfortable and not tacky? So of course I jumped onto Pinterest (my fav place) to visit to grab some inspiring ideas.
You would not believe how little it costs to actually redo your space and make it what you want. I found a leather sofa on bidding wars which I won. It is in amazing shape with a high back. I picked up some throw pillows and an entrance rug from Walmart, and then I hit up Bed Bath & Beyond for coasters and placemats. I found one red chair at Value Village and another similar beige with flecks of color on bidding wars
I needed some pictures though. I looked online to find retro art work. I found images I liked and downloaded them and got them printed at Staples and then picked up some frames from the dollar store, along with some butterflies, and two albums with colorful sleeves at the Abbotsford flea market to help tie things in together. I absolutely love my Disney Wall with my favorite movies like Brave and Toy Story!
Now when I walk into my house, I feel alive and everything is so much brighter and more colorful and fun. Sure it’s not completely what I want. I mean some newer chairs would be nice (more modern and updated) and a nicer lamp maybe & some bookshelves, a very large pic of Marilyn or Elvis for the big wall. But all in all I think it turned out awesome and was super budget friendly!
Not bad when you think about it, eh? Now I can come home and relax, feel upbeat and my home isn’t so dismal to look at. It’s fun and fresh and I will keep adding things as I go, when I find them. But you can decorate for less $500 dollars. You just have to look around, visit thrift shops or garage sales, look online and you can find what you want.
